Job Description:

At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we've tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind. Whether it's supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we're not just here to move money— we're here to move our global customers forward.
We're looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that's you and you're ready to do the most meaningful work of your career—we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.About the Role

Remitly Business is building a two-sided platform that helps businesses and individuals in emerging markets move money across borders. On the send side, we let businesses pay vendors, suppliers, and contractors abroad. On the receive side, we let businesses and sellers get paid in USD, hold balances in stable currency, and withdraw across Remitly's 170+ country disbursement network.

As a Staff Software Engineer on Remitly Business, you will set the technical direction for the product engineering that powers this marketplace. You'll lead the architecture of our Go services, APIs, and durable money-movement workflows on Temporal — and, as a well-rounded product engineer, you'll drive the frontend architecture decisions that shape our React/TypeScript applications, even though backend is your home base. This is hands-on technical leadership, not an architecture-only role: you'll code, lead large initiatives from design through launch, raise the bar through design reviews and mentorship, and use AI coding agents as a genuine force multiplier — for yourself and, by setting standards, for the whole team. You will work in a hybrid capacity from our Seattle office.

You Will
  • Own the overall technology of the team: lead large, multi-quarter initiatives — planning and sequencing work across engineers to deliver faster, and driving them from design through launch.

  • Design systems that address both current and future needs: money-movement flows at scale on Temporal — long-running, idempotent, observable workflows with correct ledgering, reconciliation, and compliance gating.

  • Drive architecture decisions across the full product surface — service boundaries, API and GraphQL contracts, data models, and the frontend architecture choices (rendering, state, client-facing API shape) they imply — partnering with our fullstack engineers on the React/TypeScript side.

  • Lead team design reviews, ensuring proposed solutions avoid unnecessary complexity and align with Remitly's long-term architecture plans; frame build-vs-buy decisions and assess new technologies for feasibility.

  • Make AI-assisted, spec-driven development (Claude Code, Codex, and similar agents) a core part of how you and the team work — designing team-level standards for AI-assisted development, identifying where AI delivers durable gains, and advising management on how AI adoption changes capacity and estimation.

  • Uphold and contribute to the evolution of our Foundational Excellence standards for security, reliability, and observability; mitigate long-term risks caused by complexity before they become incidents.

  • Actively mentor senior and mid-level engineers; drive efforts to expand the team's knowledge and skills; represent Remitly's values and technical bar in interviews.

  • Help shape short- and long-term roadmaps with Product, Design, Analytics, Compliance, Infrastructure, and Operations — communicating trade-offs concisely and adapting to technical and non-technical audiences.

You Have
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 7+ years of engineering experience building backend services in collaborative, cross-functional teams, including a track record of leading large initiatives that spanned multiple engineers or teams.

  • Advanced backend expertise in Go, or deep experience in a comparable language (e.g., Java, Kotlin, C#) and the drive to make Go your primary language quickly.

  • Enough frontend fluency to drive decisions in a React/TypeScript codebase — API contracts for clients, rendering and state trade-offs — even if you don't write frontend code every day.

  • Fluency with AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Codex) as a daily working practice, and experience (or clear readiness) setting team-level standards for their effective, verified use. (We build with AI, not AI products.)

  • Experience designing secure, scalable, performant services on cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS), and leading design reviews that keep systems simple, resilient, and extensible.

  • Experience partnering with Product Management to shape roadmaps — breaking major launches into parallel projects, estimating with AI-aware assumptions, and driving them to launch.

  • Clear, concise written and in-person communication, adapting to different audiences and articulating technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.

  • Nice to have: workflow orchestration experience (Temporal, Cadence, Step Functions, or similar); payments, fintech, or money-movement experience; hands-on React/TypeScript.

And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
