JOIN OUR MISSION TO END HOMELESSNESS

Plymouth Housing is a nonprofit organization that develops and operates permanent supportive housing for single adults who have experienced chronic homelessness. With apartment buildings throughout King County, we believe everyone deserves a safe home and the opportunity to thrive. That’s why we provide long-term housing paired with on-site services that promote stability, health, and community. Our culture is rooted in dignity, respect, and shared responsibility: We practice hospitality, communicate with care, and collaborate across differences. We value lived experience, cultural responsiveness, and approaches grounded in harm reduction, trauma-informed practice, and resident choice. We look for people who are committed to safety, learning, and continuous improvement — and who bring steady, values-aligned service in moments that are complex or high-stress.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

At Plymouth Housing, every building we own is someone’s home. We’re looking for a Senior Controller to lead accounting and financial reporting for our real estate and related-party entities: residential and commercial buildings, condo associations, construction and renovation, LIHTC projects, and property grants.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you’ll work as a peer to the Senior Controller of Nonprofit, and together you’ll lead the combined and consolidated financial statements. You’ll directly supervise the Senior Real Estate Accountants. You’ll also be the finance team’s go-to expert on real estate, multi-entity, consolidation, and complex GAAP matters, which means teaching, coaching, and documenting so your knowledge strengthens the whole department.

This role is a great fit for a seasoned, hands-on controller who enjoys solving hard technical problems and helping others learn to solve them.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct operational accounting for Plymouth’s real estate and related-party entities, including building operations and condo associations, and supervise the monthly close, balance sheet reconciliations, and intercompany transactions.
  • Oversee accounting for buildings under development and renovation, including cost tracking, capitalization, and LIHTC cost certifications.
  • Partner with Real Estate Development, Asset Management, Property Operations, investors, and lenders on complex multi-entity transactions.
  • Lead preparation of the combined and consolidated financial statements, including eliminations, in partnership with the Senior Controller of Nonprofit.
  • Direct the annual external audit for real estate entities, along with governmental audits, funder reviews, and investor compliance reporting.
  • Prepare financial reports and projections for management, the Board of Directors, funders, and investors.
  • Lead annual operating and capital budgets for real estate entities and partner with Real Estate Development on 20-year proforma budgets for new housing developments.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations on property performance, risk, and long-term sustainability.
  • Lead property grant billing and related grant accounting and report grant utilization to the Housing Operations and Quality, Innovation and Health teams.
  • Partner with the CFO on financial policies, procedures, and internal controls, and lead corrective action where gaps are found.
  • Provide backup administration of MIP Fund Accounting, Prophix, and Yardi, and lead process improvement and system implementation projects across finance.
  • Serve as the department’s subject matter expert on complex GAAP, and write technical accounting memos and guidance on new or unusual transactions and changes in standards.
  • Develop and deliver training for the finance team, including onboarding curricula, cross-training plans, and recurring technical sessions.
  • Coach and develop the Senior Controller of Nonprofit and the Assistant Controller on real estate, consolidation, close, and technical accounting topics to build bench strength and succession depth.
  • Maintain desk manuals, process documentation, and close checklists so knowledge is shared and not held by one person.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop the Senior Real Estate Accountants, and hire, mentor, and retain skilled accounting staff in a collaborative, learning-focused culture.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ATTRIBUTES WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Builds trust and works respectfully with people from many backgrounds and lived experiences, contributing to safe, welcoming housing communities where residents experience dignity, choice, and belonging.
  • Uses self-awareness and humility to communicate effectively across differences, adapt approach, and treat people with fairness and respect.
  • Expert knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit fund accounting, real estate accounting, LIHTC, multi-entity and intercompany accounting, and consolidation.
  • Recognized as a go-to technical resource who can research complex issues, reach sound conclusions, and document them clearly.
  • A natural teacher and coach who explains complex accounting in plain language, adapts to different learning styles, and builds lasting capability in others, including experienced peers.
  • Influences without relying on formal authority and gives direct, constructive feedback with respect and tact.
  • Experienced in budgeting, long-range proformas, financial projections, and analysis.
  • Skilled at designing, documenting, and monitoring internal controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Solves complex problems and successfully implements new systems and processes.
  • Demonstrates integrity, professionalism, independent judgment, and confidentiality.
  • Makes decisions, admits mistakes, and course-corrects in a fast-changing environment.
  • Manages competing deadlines while keeping high standards for accuracy.
  • Advanced Excel and financial reporting skills, with strong working knowledge of Outlook and Word.
  • Enjoys leading and mentoring, shows grace under pressure, and brings a sense of humor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA strongly preferred.
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including at least 5 years as a controller or in accounting leadership.
  • At least 5 years of nonprofit accounting experience with publicly funded (city, county, state, and federal) grants.
  • Experience accounting for multiple entities and funds, including intercompany activity, eliminations, and consolidated financial statements.
  • A track record of formally training, mentoring, and developing accounting staff, including senior-level professionals.
  • Experience leading external audits and governmental or funder audits.
  • Affordable housing real estate experience, including development, construction, and LIHTC cost certifications, strongly preferred.
  • Experience with MIP Fund Accounting, Yardi, and Prophix is a plus.

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
